So here we have the LG VX8800. I have not personally activated and used this thing so this "review" will be pretty slim.
Functionality
As far as the basic functions go, it is the same as any other LG from VZW. The menu can be set up to use the Venus format or you can use the standard 5 tab menu.
The camera is pretty sharp. and the controls for it show up on it's unique touch portion at the bottom of the phone. This packs a 2.0 MP camera and the quality is pretty good. The files are rather large and can take up quite a bit of space. If you are a shutter bug and a music enthusiast, you will need a memory card.
I like the way the touch sensor changes as you navigate through the phone. You have many more "soft keys" if you will so with that said people that want a simple phone most likely wouldn't want this phone.
Reception
Obviously, since I have not activated this phone, I can't tell what reception is like. Holding the phone and comparing it to a VX8300 and an 8130, it matches what the other phones were getting. I think it's same to say that you aren't sacrificing any thing as far as the thing being a phone.
Overall
I like it, good feature set, good reception, cool design, 'nuff said.

Check out the Boy Genius and his article on the new BlackBerry functionality. I can't freakin' wait!!
New Features in Action! BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.1 SP5 & OS 4.5.0
I have had the pleasure to use the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 for a while and I must say that it is a very reliable, stable, and functional device. I used this for about 5 weeks and I enjoyed the whole time I had it.
While not as feature rich as my N95, it is certainly an e-mail machine with some good PDA features thrown in and a decent camera round out this all-around excellent device.
E-mail Centric
As anyone that has used a BlackBerry knows that they are all e-mail powerhouses. The set-up through the device or the BlackBerry website is a breeze and the real-time push is the killer app on this phone. Up to 10 e-mail accounts can be set up on this little bad boy.
Other Features
- Camera - This camera is a 2 MP, upgraded from the GSM pearl that was 1.3 (and very grainy might I add). The pictures are sharp and clean. You can see some example on my Flickr account (www.flickr.com/diavolo770). the pics of the BMW are pretty good and probably my faves that I have taken with it.
- PDA features - It has the basic contact list (which can hold extremely detailed information), a calendar (also, very detailed), a task list, alarms, and many other features not found on standard handsets.
- Reception - Reception is absolutely wonderful for an advanced device. Usually, in my experience, with the advanced devices, you sacrifice reception. That is not the case on this unit.
- Tethering - You can also use this as a broadband modem should you need internet access on the go. The speeds are good (not quite as good as a dedicated air card, but still respectable), and the ease of set-up is a breeze with the included VZAccess Manager software.
- BlackBerry Desktop - The included sync software can sync with many different PIM's. Lotus and Outlook being the most popular, all you do is tell BlackBerry Desktop what you want to sync with, and that is all. The "Switch Device Wizard" can even import your data from existing smartphones should you not have synced your data beforehand.
Overall
Overall, this is a great unit, and if you need e-mail on the go, this is the only unit you will want to have. And now with the data package dropped to $30 to keep competitive with the likes of AT&T and T-mobile, it is a great deal to have your world at your fingertips.
I recently picked up an aircard from Verizon (naturally, since I work for a contractor that is a partner of VZW) and I am liking the freedom of having internet everywhere I go. I picked this up on a 1 year for 59.99 and since I got the hookup, I had no act fee. Not to shabby...
Anyways... The performance is exceptional even for being the most inexpensive expresscard that is offered by VZW. I was recently released within the last week, I want to say. I am bursting is speed up to 1.2 to 1.3 megabits per second. The upload, though, even on the Rev. A network does leave something to be desired as I usually on pull 300 to 500 kbps. The reception is good and the speed even in low signal areas is still very fast.
Overall, I like the card, it works well and the price is right. The service with an existing VZW account is 59.99 and unfortunately, no corporate discounts apply to this charge. But the freedom of not having to find a Wi-Fi access point and being able to do my school work which is largely based on-line is a life saver. It seems that I can justify the extra cost for the accessibility and convenience.
If you need internet access on demand, I highly recommend this card.
Packed to the gills with features.
Once I got everything charger up and configured for my T-Mo account (which was extremely easy as the phone automatically downloaded the settings for MMS, T-Zones and Total Internet), I started to delve into what this handset had to offer. I have had this phone for over a week and I keep finding new and cool features about it!
It certainly is a "Jack of all Trades".
First off, the phone portion kicks ass as the call quality is superb, the volume is nice and loud and the reception is impeccable.
Second, the music player integrates seamlessly with Nokias Music Manager or WMP 10 or 11. I have loaded 500 or so tunes using the eaac+ format that Nokia music manager converts to and the space taken up was just under a gigabyte - not too shabby compared to other MP3 players..
Third, the GPS rocks! You don't have to pay for Telenav if you have AT&T and compared to that service and Verizon's VZNavigator, the basic features blow them both out of the water. Now, you would have to pay for audible turn-by-turn directions if you wanted that, but I find that with my dash mount, I would have no use for that.
Fourth, the web browser is amazing at rendering pages as they would appear on your PC. Granted, the EDGE connection is a little slow at times, but I have found it to be speedier than Blackberries and Treo's that use EDGE as well.
Fifth, Wi-Fi is amazingly simple to set up and use. It is quite fast on this device as well.
Sixth, the application library is huge! Additional apps can be had for whatever your heart desires, and Series 60 is very flexible to allow for complex applications to run. And with the 128MB of onboard memory, you will never have to worry about program or OS lag.
Seventh, the additional media features are ridiculously cool. You can stream media over Wi-Fi to your home PC!
Final words.
There are many more features too numerous to mention, so I just hit the ones that I think are the coolest.
Overall, this phone is 10 in my book. I have had so many phones that have been disappointments over the last two years, but I have finally found one that meets all of my desires for a mobile device. If you can, GET ONE!
